ILAE 2025 uses consciousness (awareness and responsiveness) as a classifier for focal seizures and relevant unknown-class seizures. If you are unsure, leave this unrecorded or choose Unknown.

Seizure first aid
For a convulsive (tonic-clonic) seizure
- Stay with the person and time the seizure.
- Protect them from injury, clear nearby hazards, and cushion their head.
- Do not hold them down and do not put anything in their mouth.
- When the jerking stops, place them on their side in the recovery position if it is safe to do so.
- Stay with them until they are fully recovered.
For a focal seizure with confusion, unusual behaviour or reduced responsiveness
- Stay calm, stay with the person, and time the seizure.
- Guide them away from danger without restraining them unless immediate safety requires intervention.
- Do not shake them or try to force them to respond.
- Do not give food or drink until they have recovered.
Call 999 for urgent help if it is a first seizure, a convulsive seizure lasts more than 5 minutes, seizures repeat without recovery between them, there is serious injury, or there is difficulty breathing after the seizure, or there have been three or more seizures in 24 hours. Follow the person's personalised emergency plan where one exists.
First-aid wording follows current Epilepsy Action UK guidance. Individual emergency plans and rescue-medication instructions take priority.
